Do Your Homework
The first step of the car buying process is argueably one of the most important, do your homework. It is to your advantage that you do preliminary research and assess your needs before contacting any dealers. While every persons car buying journey is unique, here are some general questions you may consider to start your search.
- Are you loyal to a specific brand, if not, which brands are you open to?
- Are you looking for a sedan, SUV, van, or truck?
- What is the distance you are willing to travel to acquire a vehicle?
Once you have these parameters defined, it will be easier to search for relevent vehicles within the distance you are willing to travel. We have a couple favorite platforms that you may find helpful at this early stage in your search.
Vehicle Shopping Platforms
If you aren't sure where to start browsing for pre-owned vehicles, a few of our favorites include: Auto Trader, CarFax, and Kelley Blue Book. These platforms allow you to search for vehicles based on the parameters you define. This allows you to get more granular than a Google search, while still scowering across many dealer sites. Once you have narrowed your search down to a few different models, it is more attainable to research which best fits your needs and budget.
Narrowing The Scope
Now that you have narrowed down your options, you can dive into the details that are important to you. As a next step, here are some important topics to explore for each model that are on your narrowed down list.
- The safety of the vehicle, IIHS is a great resource for standard crash & safety test results
- The overall reliability of the brand/model you are interested in
- Future maintenance expenses to be expected during ownership
- Gas mileage in relation to your driving habits
- Available trim levels and packages
Value Your Trade
You likely have condensed your list further after doing research on individual vehicle models. That being said, you are getting closer to starting your journey with a dealer of your choice. Depending on your personal preference, you may want to value your trade ahead of time. While it isn't an exact science, this can give you a general idea of what you could get for your current vehicle. It is important to remember this number is not exact, it is a ball park. Offers are not set in stone until the dealer is able to inspect your vehicle in person, and give you an offer on paper. If you are interested in valuing your trade, use the provided link below!

To initiate contact you can submit a lead on their website, call the dealership and ask for sales, or simply stop into the dealership. We highly recommend if you are traveling a distance to visit the dealer, contact them first.
